Leave your anxiety in your past

Overcome Anxiety for a Better Life

With symptoms that can range from mild to debilitating it is important that you seek help, and potentially counselling, as early as possible so you can put the correct tools in place to help you manage and lessen the condition before it spirals out of control.

Anxiety can be defined as feelings of fear, worry, or unease which become ongoing and intrusive. These feeling can become overwhelming and can prevent you from doing even simple everyday tasks. But anxiety can also be a small niggling feeling at the back of your mind that fills you with dread and slowly, over time, you alter the things that you do in order to try and subdue those feelings.

In either circumstance, whether your anxiety feels all-consuming, or it is more subtle, it is still having a negative impact on you. But you don’t have to allow this to take over your life, there are things that you can do to support your mental health and minimise the impact of your anxiety.

Counselling is a proven strategy that can support your journey in navigating anxiety, identifying your triggers, and putting the tools in place so that you can better manage it and live the life you desire rather than one that is crippled by your anxiety. I take a collaborative approach where you and I map out what your desired outcomes are, and we then find a path together that will help you to get there. There is no ‘one-size fits all’ approach with counselling so you can rest assured that I will give you my full focus so that we find the right tools that work for you.

I understand that deciding to seek out counselling might not have been an easy decision for you and you could be feeling nervous right now about what lies ahead. Below you will find some tips on what you can start doing at home to help ease your anxiety.

5 things you can do at home to reduce anxiety

  1. Be self-aware – this means recognising when you are starting to have those negative intrusive thoughts and then doing something to interrupt and break the cycle.
  2. Regular exercise can be a fantastic tool as it can help to lift your whole mood. I’m not suggesting you take up a gym membership or start running (unless you want to), but simple things like taking a walk, dancing in your living room, or getting out into your garden can really help.
  3. Practicing square breathing can help to regulate your heart rate and blood pressure and ease other symptoms of anxiety as well as help you to reconnect with yourself.
    1. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four
    2. Hold for a count of four
    3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four
    4. Hold for a count of four
    5. Repeat.
  4. Practice mindfulness – which basically means staying in the moment, focus on the here and now and what you are currently doing rather than letting your mind wander or race ahead.
  5. Practice gratitude – usually done on a daily basis you would write down, think, or say out loud 5 to 10 things that you are grateful for. These can be small simple things or big, exciting things. The purpose here is to remind yourself of the good things in your life, to help you focus on positive elements.
